Your Contact Lens Exam: What to Expect
A contact lens prescription is not the same as a glasses prescription. Getting contact lenses requires a separate exam that goes beyond measuring your vision. At Focus Vision, your contact lens exam evaluates the curvature and health of your cornea, the quality of your tear film, and whether your eyes are suitable for lens wear, because wearing lenses on eyes that are too dry or that have an irregular surface can cause real discomfort and long-term damage.

Once your eyes have been evaluated, we fit you for a lens that matches your prescription, corneal shape, and lifestyle. You may be able to try a lens on the same day as your eye exam. Your doctor will check the fit, assess your vision, and confirm you are comfortable before finalizing your prescription.

A lens that works well at sea level may not be the best choice at 5,000 feet.
How Often Should You Have a Contact Lens Evaluation?
Most patients who wear contact lenses should have an annual contact lens evaluation, even if their vision feels unchanged. Lens fit, corneal health, and tear film can shift over time, and wearing lenses that no longer fit correctly increases the risk of eye infections, corneal abrasion, and chronic dryness. Annual evaluations keep your prescription current and give your doctor a chance to catch any changes before they become problems.
Yes. A contact lens prescription requires a separate fitting exam that evaluates corneal curvature, tear film health, and lens fit—details that a glasses prescription does not include. Even if you had a comprehensive eye exam recently, you will need a contact lens evaluation before a prescription can be issued.
Most contact lens fittings at Focus Vision take approximately 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the lens type and whether a trial lens fitting is included. Specialty fittings for GP/RGP lenses or patients with irregular corneas may require additional time and a follow-up appointment.
Most patients should have their contact lens prescription checked annually. Corneal health, tear film quality, and vision can change over time, and wearing an outdated prescription increases the risk of discomfort, poor vision, and eye health complications. Annual evaluations also ensure your lens brand and fit remain appropriate.
In many cases, yes. If trial lenses are available in your prescription, your doctor may fit you with a pair during your appointment so you can assess comfort and vision before your prescription is finalized. This is not always possible for specialty lenses or complex prescriptions, which may require a separate fitting appointment.

Multifocal contact lenses correct vision at multiple distances—near, intermediate, and far—without the need for reading glasses. They are a practical option for patients over 40 who are managing presbyopia and want to stay in contact lenses rather than switching to glasses.
Specialty Contact Lenses
For patients who have struggled with standard soft lenses, Focus Vision provides gas-permeable (GP/RGP) lens fittings and specialty evaluations for keratoconus, irregular corneas, and other difficult-to-fit conditions. Dr. Gutierrez also fits MiSight® lenses for children with progressing myopia.
